I’m a director and DP based in the midwest. I came up in documentary and I still work that way even on commercial jobs — small crew, real location, figure it out. I tend toward an elevated naturalism, but I love the punchy comedic work just as much.
I cut most of what I shoot. That is the part worth knowing if you’re hiring me — it means the thing in the treatment is the thing that survives to the final, and it means I’m shooting with the edit already in my head. I do the color and the sound design and mix on most of the work here too. High pressure, aggressive timelines, limited budgets — none of that is new, and it tends to be where I do my best work.
Home is a five-acre farm outside the city with my wife Amy and our kids — three of them, with twin boys on the way — where we raise most of what we eat. Working hard for something makes it better. That holds on the farm and it holds on a shoot.
